Aspirins

Have anybody actually tried genuine bayer aspirin during a heart attack? Did it work?

  1. Aspirin of any type (brand name unimportant) is a good first start for treating a heart attack. However, you cannot stop there. You need to get to an ER, where they can give you medications to either dissolve the clot blocking blood flow, or physically go in and retrieve the clot out of your coronary arteries. They will also give you medications like nitroglycerin to dilate your blood vessels, and oxygen to help your heart pump effectively. You will need to be monitored for complications of a heart attack common in the first few days, like bad electrical rhythms or heart failure. A heart attack should NOT be treated only at home. If you think you're having one, call an ambulance.
  2. Despite trying to raise all my risk factors with a horrible lifestyle, I've yet to develop heart disease. On the other hand, I've been using aspirin to treat heart attacks for about twenty years, sometimes Bayer but more often generic. While it decreases the mortality of heart attacks overall by about a third, representing an improvement greater than all other interventions combined, there's a problem with the concept of going from the general to the specific. You never know if you're going to be one of those in that group that have their life saved, and you don't know on the front end what other interventions might be needed, but it's a good bet there will be several before it's all over. But if you just want to rant about that silly commercial, more power to you!
