- Could have chest pain off and on for weeks.
- The symptoms would continue until you seek medical attention and drugs are given to relieve the pain. The heart attack continues until you are taken into a cath lab and they open up the vessel causing the heart attack. This can be from minutes to hours, depending upon your location, how soon you seek medical attention and whether they have a cath lab in that hospital. The heart attack starts with the onset of the pain and stops when the offending vessel is re-opened.
- I believe you are wondering how long it is before the person experiences heart damage. That is called a myocardial infarction. When the person is having the chest pain, that is essentially an attack on the heart muscle....the muscle is getting too little oxygen and is responding with pain. He/she can have heart pain without actual damage. There is no way to predict how long or often a person can have heart pain (angina) without damage. It varies depending on the cause of the pain and the severity of the blockage. That's why it is essential that a person with chest pain be treated asap, to prevent or minimize heart muscle damage, if possible.
