Aspirins

Taking too many over the counter aspirins than recommended ?

If any, are there risks to taking more than the recommended dose of over the counter aspirins. ex. says take 2 every 4 hours, what if you were to take 4 all at once, then 2 more 2 hours later? I'm just wondering, because i often take more than the bottle says depending on the pain.

  1. My doc had me on double that. That said having that much pain you need to see a doctor.
  2. Well, first off, you're probably not going to have a great deal of benefit from taking more than the recommended dose, secondly, yes, there are potential side effects depending on how much you take and how often you take it. An acute aspirin overdose can actually be quite dangerous, but you're unlikely to do that to yourself unless you're trying - it takes a pretty significant quantity. A chronic overdose can cause kidney damage (taking it regularly day in and day out) as well as a predisposition to bleed (though nowhere near what is caused by anticoagulants). Aspirin can actually be quite dangerous if used improperly, so I would restrict myself to the recommended dosage, if you find that you have pain that just isn't being controlled, you can try tylenol or another NSAID like advil or aleve (again, according to the recommended doses) and if those aren't cutting it for you, see your doctor.
  3. At some point, it may damage your kidneys or liver if you take many for a prolonged period of time.
  4. thins the blood can cause gastric upset , ulcers, internal bleeding
  5. yes yes yes... theres risks with every drug. Taking Over the counter medicines is a common problem especially among the elderly because they have like a million problems. Don't overdose again. its very dangerous
  6. This is not recommended, since you are more likely to have side effects when you take an overdose. If you take more than is recommended you are more likely to get gastric bleeding, ulcers, nausea, dyspepsia. Aspirin also increases bleeding time, and decreases platelet aggregation, so you are more likely to bleed more if you get cut. If the normal dose of aspirin is not working for you, you should try another drug with less side effects, and more potent.
